Who We Are
We
are a group of volunteers who have completed an intensive basic
training course covering botany, horticulture, entomology, soil
management, plant pathology, and pest management. Our purpose is
to provide educational opportunities for home gardeners in our county.
Here in Yakima County, our primary function is
to staff the plant clinic. The plant clinic is our headquarters
for answering your gardening questions. You can contact us by calling
the Yakima County Cooperative Extension Office and asking to speak
to a master gardener, or you can drop by and visit us in person.
Our plant clinic is open spring through fall in
the Yakima County Courthouse, Room 233. During the busy months of
May through September, the clinic is open Monday through Friday.
Call us during other months to check our schedule.
If you drop by for a visit, we encourage you to
bring a physical sample of your problem when possible. Please review
our tips for collecting a good sample
before you visit.
Becoming a Master Gardener
If
you love gardening and are looking for a way to contribute to your
community, the Master Gardener Program may be for you. Each master
gardener must complete the required training and give back at least
50 hours to the gardening community of Yakima County in return for
the training. The training classes are held one afternoon a week
from late January to early May. Master Gardeners give back most
of their volunteer hours by working in the plant clinic, demonstration
garden and/or the greenhouse. However, there are lots of other fun
and rewarding opportunities to volunteer as a Master Gardener.
